Find the Right Business Coach For You

I am an excellent business coach, but I am not the best business coach for everyone. Hiring a coach is like dating – there has to be chemistry. I truly believe it’s about fit and how you feel with the other person. It also depends on where you are in your own life as well. Sometimes, one coach is great for a particular phase in your life. When you evolve from there, you might need a different kind of coach.

When I first decided to hire my very first business coach, a friend of mine gave me three names. I called them all. I chose the one with no experience in my industry. On paper, it didn’t make sense. But I still remember our first call as I walked through Costco—I felt like I found the one.

In addition to feeling an authentic connection, I also recommend that you ask possible coaches these 7 questions before signing on the dotted line:

  1. What business experience do you have?
If coaching is their first business, you may want to reconsider. If they haven’t ever run a business before, how can they help you?
  2. Have you tried things and fell on your face?
Ask them to be vulnerable. And to give examples.
  1. Why did you become a business coach?
This is a generic question; however the answers are always quite telling. You’ll get a sense of who they are and what their vision and mission are.
  1. Can you tell me about who you are?
This is not just business stuff. You’re asking to know THEM as a person. What matters to them personally. Can you relate to each other as people. Are they really gonna get a stressed out mom of 6 if they aren’t married? (Just asking.)
  1. Do you have a coach?
Coaches should put their money where their mouths are. No one has all the answers. Are they investing in themselves?
  1. What successes have your clients had?
It’s great to see testimonials but you want to hear the facts. If you’re looking to grow, you want to know how each coach has helped his or her clients grow. Ask for numbers. Numbers don’t lie.
  1. What can I expect from coaching with you?
Your purpose here is to uncover their coaching style and see if it jives with you. Do they hold your hand and coddle you or hold your feet to the fire and call you on your shit? Ask them how they intend to keep you accountable.

Start here, call references, understand the time commitment, and ask a few personal questions of your own. Coaching is an investment in your business and worth every penny if you’re working with a coach who is right for you.
