Let’s be honest, we have lots of reasons not to do things and I’m a firm believer that if you don’t want to do something, you don’t have to. You can just say no. No excuse necessary.
Yet there are times when we want things – and I don’t mean a new pair of shoes. I mean big things, the goals we write down that make our palms sweaty, our heart beats faster and it makes us uncomfortable. These are the real things that we want, what we are yearning for.
They are as varied as people are different: a successful business, a new job, a new relationship. The list goes on.
But why don’t we have them?
I’m too busy, I don’t know enough, I never meet anyone, I can’t do it. The excuses are also endless.
Here’s the deal – we need to get out of our own way. We cannot continue using these excuses to keep us from having and being the best version of our ourselves.
It’s time to kick ourselves in the ass and get on with it. For once and for all, let the excuses go!
Here are five of the most common excuses, which is yours?
1) I’m too busy.
I don’t have time to do anything more than what I’m already doing. Yes, we’re all busy, yet if you want something enough you’ll find the time.
2) I’m afraid.
Change is scary. We’re comfortable with what we know and when we decide we want something different it requires change. I have learned that the idea of change is way scarier than the actual change. Take a deep breath (put your head between your knees if you need to) and take a step. Every little step counts!
3) You’re not motivated.
If you are not motivated, if you don’t want it, you won’t do it. Stop and think about it. Do you really want it? Are you willing to do what needs to be done to get what you want? If you answered no, then move on to the next thing. If you answered yes, then you just need to get moving.
4) I don’t know how.
It’s ok. There are lots of things we don’t know and yet there are lots of things we do know. If you don’t know, find someone who does. This is the time to lean on people in your world.
5) I don’t know if I can.
Self-doubt can eat us alive. Stop it! Just stop it! Do what you need to do: affirmations, pep talks, if you need some help get it, find a coach, mentor or group to help you stop those voices in your head. The only way they will go away is when a smarter voice – yours – drowns them out.
There are just some of the common things that keep us stuck. Everyone experiences them. The question is what are you going to do about it.
